Judy M. asks Annie:
Q What is your potting mix? I wick water and have tried several combinations. A lot of my violets still do not take up the water from the well. I use actual AV wicking cord. Do you have any suggestions?
A Thank you for your question. The mix that I currently use is Sungro’s Sunshine Mix #1 (I have a bale of it, so it actually says LC1 on it, but it’s the same thing). I cut it about 60/40 with perlite. I use Mason’s Twine that i get from a bigbox store for wicks, and I make sure they are wet before placing them.
I hope this helps,
Annie :-)

I mix up my own potting mix and use 1/3/,1/3,1/3 blend of equal parts Perlite, Vermiculite and Pro-Mix® BX . I like the Pro-Mix® BX Biofungicide
it does not have fertilizer add. It is similar to your Sunshine Mix #1. I usually make up and fill a 50 plastic trash container which last about 6 months. When I need potting mix I fill a 5 gallon plastic bucket, add a generous amount of boiling water, let it sit over night covered and this re-hydrate the mix. My final ingredient is about 1 quart of worm castings (Worm Castings contain a highly active biological mixture of bacteria, enzymes, remnants of plant matter and animal manure, as well as earthworm cocoons). I am ready to start re-potting.
I did have one question which I forgot to ask in my last post about potting mix and that was about (Macronutrients & Micronutrients). I know what is Micronutrients those are required in trace element needed for normal growth and development of any living organisms. But what are macronutrients? Is that normal fertilizer or something different?
