Chuck asks Annie:
Q Good to be seeing your “All About African Violets” podcasts again.
I was inspired from your first season to acquire Jersey Snow Flakes … and I, currently, have two plants which are growing/blooming fairly well.
I see that you still have your Jersey Snow Flakes as well.
My question is … have you ever had it in a pot larger than 4″ in diameter ?
A Hi Chuck,
The answer to your question, is yes! My Jersey Snow Flakes is currently in a 5″ pot. If your plant is growing well in a 4″ pot there is no need to move it up to a larger size. This particular cultivar grows larger for me in my growing conditions.
I hope this helps,
Annie :-)
I’m curious – – – if you use a 5″ pot, do you put perlite in the bottom 2″? Or are the roots of Jersey Snow Flakes enough to fill the entire pot? Standard 5″ pots are usually tall. The 4″ pots that I use for my violets tend to be more shallow. I received a leaf of Jersey Snow Flakes this spring and am surprised to learn that it is a rather large plant, depending on growing conditions.
Hi Janice! I think that the amount of coarse perlite that I use in a larger pot is probably about an inch and a half. So, a little more than in a 4″ pot. And yes, Jersey Snowflakes can be a relatively large standard if it likes your growing conditions :-)
